Claudia van den Heiligenberg en Dyanne Bito zijn door bondscoach Vera Pauw uit de selectie van Het Nederlands Vrouwenelftal gezet. Dat meldt o.a.

A week ago I blogged about a young Dutch skater coming out. Earlier this week,  hockey player Brendan Burke did the same. A very brave move, in my opinion.

http://www.cas.muohio.edu/images/burke.jpg

Imagine a very talented football player in the US, or a soccer player in the UK doing the same. Imagine the talk.

Brendan’s father Brian is Toronto Maple Leafs and US Olympic Team General Manager. They did an interview together with The Sports Network (TSN) in Canada, talking about Brendan’s decission to come out.

“I wish this burden would fall on someone else’s shoulders, not Brendan’s,” said Brian Burke, who managed the 2007 Stanley Cup-winning Anaheim Ducks before joining the Maple Leafs. “Pioneers are often misunderstood and mistrusted. But since he wishes to blaze this trail, I stand beside him with an axe! I simply could not be more proud of Brendan than I am, and I love him as much as I admire him.”

“Any father would support their kid,” Leafs forward Jason Blake said. “It’s one of those things in life. I think you guys [the media] are making it a bigger issue than it is. I don’t know why we’re even talking about it.”

Currently listening to A Girl Called Eddy (album: A Girl Called Eddy)

You might - or might not - have read about the outrage caused by a British “journalist” called Jan Moir. The first time I heard about it was when a British friends of mine started posting about it, clearly showing their disapproval and disgust for Moir’s total ignorance. One even went as far as calling her the C-word (and he is one of the smartest, nicest straight man I know - so for him to use that word…). Anyway, read about it here and the update here (hello, 21,000 complaints and then some). Sounds to me as if Moir has a problem with certain possible “assets” of the homosexual lifestyle. And she’s conveniently forgetting the fact that similar “assets” can be found in heterosexual lifestyles as well. She’s issued some sort of apology in the meantime, but she clearly doesn’t get it. Jan Moir may think she’s not a homophobe, she can at least pride herself in being a bigot.

Fortunately, there are still good things happening in the UK; like this Scottish LGBT-friendly soccer team who are deservedly nominated for a Stonewall Award.

AfterEllen.com reviews an interesting comic book called Dolltopia, which is really a book for all ages, and discusses diversity. I’m not a big fan of the graphics, but it serves its purpose, and it does look interesting to me. Looks like creator Abby Denson’s been promoting Dolltopia across North America.

Globe and Mail ran an interesting article about the wiring of boys’ and girls’ brains. It turns out there’s no significant difference, but it’s magnified by parents… And - surprisingly - same sex schools.

According to this article the Taliban has published a rulebook, and reading it I didn’t know whether to wince or snicker at the stupidity of it all. I mean, any educated person instinctively knows that a band of bearded men telling others to treat women badly (I’m not even sure they are considered second class citizens), what to think, how to act and how to dress cannot be for the greater good. To the advantage of the Taliban; yes. For the greater good; no.

This veteran spoke out in favor of same sex marriage. I can only say that if he’s honored with any medals I am sure he has earned each and every one of them! I’d just want to give a hug and say thank you.

In the meantime President Obama is tackling DADT, the Canadians again show they may not shout as loud as the Americans do, but they are just as great. Halifax’s Chronicle Herald published an article on Canadian forces and their inclusion of gays. A friend of mine can attest to that; she didn’t join till she was 33. And she is still serving 19 years later. Just sayin’, President Obama.

Are you on Facebook, and confused about “live feed” and “news feed”? Check out this page on how to adjust the settings to make it less confusing, and more desirable for you to read (some people seem to post every fifteen minutes - if you know what I mean)…

Charlize Theron. I like her. Vocal human rights advocate. Don’t get me wrong, but she is such a hussy! She kissed a lady for charity. Some lucky lady (she coughed up $140,000 but got a 20-second smooch)…

More Serena Ryder news. (I should get paid for this. I’d settle for a smooch with Serena. Just kidding! Or am I?) She’s currently touring the US with labelmates NeedToBreathe (Serena’s playing Chicago on Halloween!) and “Is it o.k.” will be released in the US on November 3rd - almost a year after its release in homeland Canada. Read more on it here. In the meantime Serena’s also featured in one of City Sonic’s episodes on how she started out. Watch it here.

When I found out Vertical Horizon had a new album out (”Burning the days“) I was thrilled; I wasn’t aware of the fact the band had reformed. Their album “Everything you want” was one of my favorite albums in the late ’90s. Now and then, I still play a couple songs with the singer of my band. Let’s hope they start touring again :D

Currently listening to Fleetwood Mac (album: Greatest Hits)

Apparently, I’m not entirely fashion impaired: Canadians are warming up to Electra Bikes. Hee! Mine’s not an Electra (a Schwinn, maybe?) but resembles the Punk model from the Cruiser collection. Check out the site.

You’ve probably read about it or seen it on the news: hurricane Bill is set to lash Nova Scotia in about 12 hours. The Armdale Yacht Club, home of Foxglove, made today’s newspaper. Read the article here.

The Canadian Press: Beach goers flock in the thick fog to watch the approaching waves on Lawrencetown Beach, N.S.

Further south Florida Governor Charlie Crist half-joked to a group of real estate agents that the state’s lack of hurricane activity is because God is listening to him. Uh yea, mr. Crist, can you spell idiot?

Another thing that possibly hasn’t escaped your attention is the controversy surrounding 18-year-old Caster Semenya. Breaking records and winning gold, she’s not to enjoy her 15 seconds of fame.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) subjected Semenya to a gender verification process both in her native South Africa, and since her arrival in Berlin. The official investigation could take weeks to draw conclusions with an endocrinologist, a gynaecologist and a psychologist all involved.
What baffles me is the following statement by someone of the IAAF: “It’s a medical issue. It’s not an issue of cheating. We’re more concerned for the person not to make this something which is humiliating for her and something which is going to affect her in a negative way. This is why you will appreciate we have to be discreet. She is a human being who was born as a woman and who has grown up all her life as a woman but who is now in a position where this is being questioned.”
WTF?! Pardon my language, but the medical issue actually trumps cheating?
Even though I’ve read about Semenya being used to this ridicule (apparently, she once asked a police officer who stopped her outside the ladies room if she needed to drop her pants to prove she’s a woman) I can’t help but feel sorry for her; she should be celebrating her gold medal - like fellow sprinter Bolt - but instead she’s being scrutinized, and disrespected by some of her peers. Anyhow, this inspired me to write a new column on gender for EurOut.

In the meantime writer this article is a shining example of how some people need more than just a sensitivity training (how rude is that?!), while in Australia two trans men have won a court appeal allowing them to be legally recognized as men without having to have their female reproductive organs removed. And star of the Rocky Horror Show, Richard O’Brien, has suggested that society should allow people to grow up and not feel like they have to conform to a certain gender. Read that article here.

I also read about a gay and trans recruitment day by Scottish police. Although I am all for equal opportunity, I also wonder why they have to have a seperate recruitment day. The people coming in that day could be the proverbial sitting ducks: ignorant homophobes and religious hate mongers know where to go to for a bit of fun…

Gayexecutions

In response to the report from Human Rights Watch that came out earlier this week, CNN talks to gay Iraqis about the atrocities being committed by militias in that country, and the hundreds of executions that have happened since 2004. Watch a clip here.

http://popularphasion.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/suicide_girls_fight_club_01.jpg

CSI creator Anthony Zuiker, friends with co-founders Missy and Sean Suicide, called on the Suicide Girls to do a photoshoot for the release of his new cross-platform Digi-Novel, Level 26: Dark Origins. Read more on it here.

About a week and a half ago I came across a lesbionic-ish video on 8Asians.com that was banned from YouTube. Read the post and watch the video, but be warned it may be NSFW! It certainly is an attention grabber, eh? Hopefully, the upcoming feature film The People I’ve Slept With is just as interesting.

Finally, I go back to Nova Scotia to end this post on a happy/positive note. It’s good to know there are still plenty of decent people out there who pass it on to their children. The article of a bunch of kids rescuing a stranded dolphin is heartwarming, eh?

So I finally did it. I ended my membership at the gym earlier today.
When I first joined this one several years ago I went there 3 times a week - except when I trotted the globe. Always prone to injuries I mainly worked out to strengthen muscles and keep the bod firm.
When I was young(er) I played all kinds of sports. Anything from martial arts to soccer and rugby (love that, but it also wrecked my body) to volleyball. Injuries didn’t take long to heal.
Now they seem to take forever, and I haven’t been to my gym in over a year. Since I’m still struggling with my shoulders (the chronic bursitis of the right one isn’t as bad as the physical “barrier” in the left one I popped over a year ago - I still can’t fully raise that arm) I decided it’s not worth to pay the 55 Euros a month if I’m not going, nor know when I’ll be able to work out 3 times a week again.
There’s an arrangement between the Courts in my town and a little gym nearby which enables me to work out once a week. For free.
So that’s what I’m doing in the meantime - besides the exercises I do at home.

The amount of Tiger Balm I’ve used over the last year or so… Thank you, Krista, for pointing out Robax Platinum to me.

Currently listening to Theory of a Deadman (album: Scars & Souvenirs), The Dudes (album: Blood, guts, bruises, cuts), Shinedown (album: The Sound of Madness)

I’m over my jetlag and I’ve finally finished the last of my posts on my most recent Canada trip. In case you’ve missed it: part 1 - part 2 - part 3. I recommend you have a mug of whatever beverage or drink you feel like having before sitting down and enjoying the read. AND my latest column’s published on EurOut. Read it here.

The other day I had a genuine WTF?! moment when I stumbled across an article on how British laws makes children book authors who visit schools to submit their names to a national database that aims to protect children from paedophiles. That includes J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman. And speaking of J.K. Rowling, the premiere of the latest Harry Potter movie probably hasn’t escaped you either. I admit I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m waiting till the Potter fans have seen it and then it’s my turn. Don’t get me wrong, I’m crazy about the books, but I can’t stand the massive throngs of people well. Anyhoo, apparently actor Daniel Radcliffe doesn’t mind being mistaken for a gay dude. He’s laughing it off like the good sport he is and continues to repeat he’s grown up around gay people. Sounds as if he’s been around normal, wholesome queers. Oh, and let’s not forget his parents; yay for parents who don’t discriminate against gays.

On the subject of movies… I’ve seen the trailer to “Whip it” (directorial debut of Drew Barrymore) and it has Ellen Page and kick ass chicas in it. I want to see WHIP IT! (Doesn’t that remind you of that 80s Devo song?)

A while ago I reported about how an elementary schooler in California got barred from doing her presentation on Harvey Milk. That school was forced to appologize. Isn’t it funny how kids are sometimes more mature than adults?

It’s no secret homophobia runs rampant in soccer (or any other “manly” sports for that matter). In Turkey a referee claimed he was dismissed from his duties because he’s gay. And next season, a 25-year-old trans man will become the first to play competitive football in a men’s team in Australia. Wow.

In the meantime, to my pleasant surprise, a Pakistan court orders equal benefits for trans people. Again: wow.

Pride is up next. Are you attending? Dutch bookstore American Bookcenter (you’ll find a lot of American expats there) is doing their thing to show their support to the gay community:

=====================================

— GAY PRIDE EVENTS @ ABC —
=====================================
The American Book Center has been loud, proud, and celebrating literary diversity since its opening in 1972, and in 1978 opened the first gay bookstore in The Netherlands: Wilde. Wilde became the core of our gay literature and magazine sections when it moved home to our shelves, and today our gay and lesbian writers not only have dedicated shelves of their own, but you’ll find current and classic pink authors proudly integrated into all of our sections.

On 30 July, beginning at 6:00pm, we’ll participate in the Amsterdam Pride Literary Route with actors from Theaterworks Amsterdam presenting live readings from books like: A Room with a View (E.M. Forster); Lethal Affairs (Kim Baldwin & Xenia Alexiou); Swish (Joel Derfner); and Flesh and Blood (Michael Cunningham).  In between, our helpful hosts will help you find the answer to the all-important question: “How Gay are You?”, and “Happy 4 U”, the annual Pride exhibition at the ABC Treehouse (Voetboogstraat 11, just across the square), will stay open to visitors until 9pm.

Sharleen Spiteri is no stranger to Pride events (she and her band Texas performed at least at one UK one in the past to show their support back at the gays). Anyhoo, she did a complete make over for her solo album - growing out her hair and dressing up in dresses and high heeled shoes. And this was one of the few times my mom actually agreed with me that a certain lady looks way better in simple jeans and a (t-)shirt/sweater outfit.
Glad to see Sharleen dressed in a “normal” outfit at a recent concert in Liverpool, UK. Even my mom approves.
http://www.watchingcsi.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/jorja-fox-beach-candids-venice-ca-july-15-05.jpg
AP reported that Jorja Fox will reprise her role as Sara Sidle during the tenth season of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.Fox left CSI during the eighth season when her character quit her job in “Goodbye and Good Luck”. She returned for several episodes during season nine, reuniting with Gil Grissom at the end of William Petersen’s final episode, “One to Go”. Fox will appear in the premiere of season ten, which airs on September 24, and she will also appear in an unspecified number of subsequent episodes.

“We’re thrilled for Jorja’s return to CSI,” executive producer Carol Mendelsohn told the Associated Press. She added that viewers will “discover where life has taken Sara Sidle and what brings her back to the CSI team in Las Vegas in our premiere episode.” There is no word on whether Petersen will return.

Finally, I’d like to end this post on an inspiring note: 15-year-old Kimberly Anyadike finished a record-breaking flight across the country, becoming what is believed to be the youngest African-American female to pilot an airplane from coast to coast. How cool is that? Read more about this little lady here. She’s told the press she plans to meet President Obama. Well, if that record won’t get you to meet the President, I don’t know what will.

Currently listening to Bif Naked (single: Sick)

Kelly McGillis has come out of the closet and, as expected, Republican poster boy Bill O’Reilly responded to that in his usual way - by calling her a pinhead. Very classy, Bill.

Sims When I saw this pic I did a double take as I initially thought it was actor George Eads (aka CSI’s Nick Stokes). But a second look told me it wasn’t Eads auditioning for a gay role in a football movie.

The handsome dude in the picture is Brian Sims, a regular Joe, who happened to play football in college and is gay.  Read about his coming out in this gay college football story.

It looks as if he contributed to visibility of gay athletes by defying certain stereotypes, and educated team mates and people around him.

Earlier this week a new Quinnipiac University poll says 56% of Americans support the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” while 37% oppose it:

Dadt “The ban on openly gay men and women in the military should be repealed, American voters say 56 - 37 percent, including 50 - 43 percent among voters with family in the military, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. American voters who think being gay is an individual’s choice, 36 percent, are generally less supportive of gay rights than those who think people are born gay, 42 percent.  White Catholics say 64 - 29 percent that gays in the military should be allowed to come out, while white evangelical Christians support “don’t ask; don’t tell” 53 - 40 percent. Voters reject 58 - 35 percent, including 56 - 39 percent in military households, the argument that allowing openly gay men and women to serve would be divisive, the independent Quinnipiac University survey of 2,041 registered voters nationwide finds.”

However, the poll shows much different results regarding same-sex marriage results than an ABC / Washington Post poll released today as well. While the ABC/WaPo poll showed 49% in favor of marriage equality, the Quinnipiac poll show 38% in favor of marriage equality with 55% opposed. The Quinnipiac poll, however, does show 57% would be in support of civil unions for same-sex couples.

AND: The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, also known as the Matthew Shepard Act, has been passed by the US House of Representatives.

The bill expands federal hate crime laws to include crimes where the victims were targeted on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender, and disability. It means the federal government could step in to prosecute in states that request it or in those who choose not to prosecute.

The Senate version of the bill is to be introduced soon by Senator Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat.

President Obama has indicated that if the bill comes to his desk he will sign it, releasing a statement prior to yesterday’s vote. He said: “I urge members on both sides of the aisle to act on this important civil rights issue by passing this legislation to protect all of our citizens from violent acts of intolerance.”

He added it would “enhance civil rights protections, while also protecting our freedom of speech and association.”

The bill, which passed 249-175, has been dubbed the Matthew Shepard bill after the gay teenager who was brutally murdered in 1998.

North Carolina congresswoman Virginia Foxx was forced to apologise this week after she called the murder a “hoax” to justify passing the bill, saying Mr Shepard had died in a robbery. She later said she had used “a poor choice of words,” adding that his killers deserved their punishment of life imprisonment terms.

Opponents have argued that the bill is divisive and could cause religious leaders to be prosecuted. Representative Lamar Smith, a Texas republican, said the bill “divides America” by protecting special groups.

“We should focus on the opposite, uniting America,” he said. “The bill is probably unconstitutional and will be struck down.”

Another clear case of ignorant and misinformed men in Saudi Arabia as they’re trying to clamp down unlicenced gyms for women. Yep: segregation still exists.

In the meantime Saudi Arabia may ban marriage for girls below 18, a government minister said after a case of an eight-year-old girl marrying a man more than 40 years her senior drew international criticism and embarrassed the kingdom.

“Among the options that are available and excluding the issue of puberty, is to ban marriage for [people] under 18,” Justice Minister Mohammed al-Eissa told Asharq al-Awsat newspaper. He was responding to a question about his ministry’s plan to deal with the marriage of young girls.

“A girl below 18 is often not fit to take the family responsibility especially if she quickly gives birth [after marriage],” he said.

Saudi Arabia is a patriarchal society that applies an ascetic form of Sunni Islam which bans unrelated men and women from mixing and gives fathers the right to wed their sons and daughters to whomever they deem fit.

Many Saudi clerics, including the kingdom’s chief cleric Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Al al-Sheikh, endorse the practice of marrying underage girls, arguing that in doing so they avoid spinsterhood or the temptation of engaging in relationships outside the wedlock.

A 50-year-old man in the small Saudi town of Onaiza agreed this week to divorce his eight-year-old bride.

Financial considerations could prompt some Saudi families to wed their underage daughters to much older men.

Many young girls in Arab countries that observe tribal traditions are married to older husbands but not before puberty. Such marriages are also driven by poverty in countries like Yemen, one of the poorest countries outside Africa…

My latest contribution for EurOut.org is published online and is about the (in)visibility of queer Asian women. Read it here - and don’t hesitate to leave a comment! (Either there or here below :D )

The last thing I heard of Bif Naked was that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Apparently, she’s battled it AND recorded a new album in the process called “The Promise”. It’ll be released on May 5th in Canada, and her current single is (aptly) titled “Sick”. I like the songs off the album I’ve heard so far!

Watch a recent interview with Bif on The Hour (fast foward till around the 30-minute mark). Oh, and I really like the short ‘do on Bif :D
