Firstly, I’m going to post about this truly horrible event. When I first saw the footage I could not believe wat I was seeing. So a warning beforehand; it’s not for the faint hearted, and possibly NSFW. What I’m talking about? A vicious attack that happened earlier where a guide dog was attacked by a pitbull type dog. The owner of the attacking dog fled the scene after he managed to get his dog off the guide dog, leaving the visually impaired owner in great distress. Anyone in the London area: keep an eye out!

Skunk

Staying in the UK for more news: rock band Skunk Anansie is the latest in a line of many public faces to join the “Some people are gay - get over it” campaign.

Hopefully, Danish filmmakers Iben Haahr Andersen and Minna Grooss are taking their documentary “Hello my name is Lesbian” to film festivals around the world. It’s released on DVD. Judging from the trailer (it has English subs!) it looks like an interesting documentary. Watch it here.

In response to “Humpday”, in which two heterosexual guys (played by Joshua Leonard and Mark Duplass) take their relationship to an entirely different level when they decide to participate in an art film project that involves the two of them having sex, Lynn Shelton made a “sequel” called “Beyond gay“. I watched the short and found it disturbing (in a good way) and very amusing. Warning: even though it isn’t graphic, it’s definitely NSFW.

Earlier this week another episode of Cherry Bomb was posted, and I was delighted to see actor/comedian Jason Stuart amidst the ladies. Showcasing a good sense of humor, Stuart also made several very sensible remarks. This week’s episode was about “The gay and lesbian divide” - a discussion I’ve had with several of my gay friends. I found it interesting to hear what they had to say about it.

Photographer Spencer Tunick has started preparing for another one his famous shoots. In March next year he’ll be one the headliners for the 2010 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival. Read more about it here.

Dutch skater Ireen Wüst won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics in 2006. Even then there were rumors and people wondering, but the then 19-year-old wisely concentrated on her skating carreer.

Apparently, Wüst came out the closet in an interview the other day saying she’s very happy and has a wonderful girlfriend since May. Good for her.

The past week or so I’ve been reading about a movie called “Precious” (so far it sounds like a movie I’d like to see), including an interview with actress Paula Patton - who is pretty attractive:

Apparently, according to AfterEllen, reporters keep asking Precious director Lee Daniels why the lesbian teacher in the film is “so pretty.” His response: “I have no problem with pretty lesbians, and besides, I thought it would be nice to have one glamorous character in the mix after all we go through with the mother. Why not the lesbian teacher who turns out to be the real hero and the one friend to Precious? When you have beauty on screen, you can breathe. Who cares if she’s queer?” Mr. Daniels, your casting was very effective.

Read an interview with Paula Patton and why she thinks playing a lesbian is important in “Precious” here.

I read about the movie sometime last week, and I was pretty excited just checking out the trailer!

Hannah Free is a low budget movie, starring Sharon Glass - of Cagney and Lacey fame. The trailer looks interesting, and heartwarming, too. I can’t wait to check it out myself.

According to this article the BBC announced the cast of a new 6-part show called “Lip service”. I’m not British (obviously), but of all the names I know Laura Fraser. I’m sure most queer ladies know her from “Nina’s Heavenly Delights“, but she’s also played gay (as Helen Baxendale’s girlfriend) in “The Investigator” - which is based on a true story.

Read more about it in this AfterEllen article here… Uh-huh, on the Scottish accent :D

Almost a decade ago, I caught the greater part of an episode of Bad Girl by accident. By the end of it I wanted to see the next one, and that got me hooked. It doesn’t happen very often, but I was pulled in by a well written script and a good cast.

I stopped watching after season three, and when the show was released on DVD I went out on got those first three seasons.

Imagine my surprise when I saw a recent interview with Simone Lahbib on the AfterEllen site :D

BBC3 has commissioned a new drama, called “Lip Service”,  which will focus on the sex lives of a group of 20-something lesbian friends in Glasgow. The six-part series is scheduled to be filmed later this year.

People who know me know I have a soft spot for loud, angry rock music. Over the past two decades I’ve seen Guns ‘n Roses (a decade and a half ago), Skid Row, Faith No More, Soundgarden (in their “Badmotorfinger” period, which is their best album - imho), Deftones, Rammstein, Linkin Park, Danko Jones, Mastodon, and Tool amongst others.

Now, when I first heard “Last resort” by Papa Roach I was blown away by the intensity of the music, the lyrics - and the song. The subsequent singles weren’t bad, but their subsequent albums just didn’t stand out much.

Thanks to AfterEllen I have seen the video to their latest single. And watching it I realized I’ve heard the song during a road trip to Annapolis Valley (along with Theory of a Deadman’s latest). I quite like the song and the video - despite other people being grossed out by the BDSM elements and a few short suspension body modification scenes.

You can watch it on their site — and, just a warning, it’s probably NSFW.

Is it me, or did Papa Roach put out an ad for Suicide Girls for the video? ;)

An article about a girl’s perfect (school) attendance grabbed my attention. Seriously; wow! And in the meantime a high school elects a gay student for prom queen.

And more on gender bending: HBO aired a documentary called “Kick like a girl“.

AfterEllen.com also ran an article on a comic book called “No girls allowed“, which is a kid’s book about women throughout history who dressed up as men to achieve their goals and dreams (and succeeded). I ordered my copy a few days ago. Do check out the trailer on the site.

TransLondon’s announced it’s boycotting London Pride, after trans women were denied access to female toilets at last year’s Pride and one was allegedly sexually assaulted. I’m not transgendered, but no stranger to what I’d call gender politics either. I suppose unisex toilets are out of the question?

Hillary Clinton seems to beat Obama to the punch when she notified the state department of forthcoming changes for gays and lesbians. It’s about time if you ask me.

Doesn’t that look awesome? Read *here* why it didn’t make the Guinness Book of Records. Seriously, people… How lame is that?

Looks like those persistent rumors about the actress have come to a full stop: she’s out the closet. Watch the interview here (it’s around the 6:50 mark).

McGillis said she is “definitely [looking for] a woman…I’m done with the man thing. I did that. I need to move on in life. That’s another part of being true to yourself.”

The actress called her coming out “part of an ongoing process.” She added: “It’s been a challenge for me personally…It was a long arduous journey and I had a lot of things happen that convinced me that God was punishing me because I was gay. So that was a hard process. Life is a freaking journey, and it’s about growing and changing, and coming to terms with who and what you are, and loving who and what you are.”

I remember how McGillis and The Accused co-star Jodie Foster were rumored to have something going on, and I thought it was silly. I mean, even if they were it’s their own business and who are we to out them? Between The Accused and now Foster’s come out, and McGillis apparently decided to come clean as well. Good for her - just too bad she felt compelled to hide in that darn closet for so long.

I wonder after Clementine Ford and Kelly McGillis how many more L-Word actresses will come out? ;)
